9/20-Palazzo Vecchio

Where were we?  Oh yeah - the Palazzo Vecchio (Old Palace) - begun in 1299 and finished in 1314; from 1540-1550 the home of Cosimo I, who then moved to the Pitti (new) Palace...outside is the copy of David (where the original statue was until it was moved indoors...) - the place is a testiment to ostentatious living and beautiful art...



 

 

12/2 Thursday's Guild Meeting

I really enjoyed the Dallas Quilt Guild's meeting Thursday night - I turned in my quilt and the program was Dr. and Mrs. Locke - they brought his Last Supper quilt, along with some of their quilt collection.

The Supper quilt is amazing - it took him 2.5 years to make it and there are more than 50,000 pieces - started in 1996 (he's 78 now) - he had a print of the original mural blown up to the point where he could see the pixels and when his wife refused to make the quilt, he decided to do it himself...

Here's a closer shot of it - it just thousands and thousands of squares...

Indeed - a marvelous obsession.  You can read more about it on their website http://www.thesupper.net/.

They were also nice enough to bring some of their quilt collection; some made by one or the other of them and some antique ones and those were fun to see as well - if you click on the pictures, it should show you a slightly larger one and then you'll have to use your "back" button to get back to this page.

 

The Cover for Kids Challenge Quilt

So, if you remember, I started with this:

And what I've ended up with is this at ~48"x~48":

Finished, washed and ready to turn in.  I think it's kind of cute...and I'm not 100% happy about the stitching (and yes, one of the squares is upsidedown), but better finished than perfect!  I'd sleep under it!
And the next one will be better...
